Individual Students Overcoming Adversity Case Studies

Student 1: A student joined us from a local school in year 10. A large number of their courses used different exam boards and taught different units/texts – this meant they had so much to catch up on. They worked exceptionally hard by giving up a significant amount of their personal time, studying at home and attending revision sessions in the holidays and after school. We are so very proud of what this student has achieved, especially in light of the various challenges they faced and overcame to gain the following results: English Language 7, English Literature 6, mathematics 5, Combined Science 5/5, History 6, Enterprise and Marketing – Merit, BTEC Sport – Pass.

Student 2: Student 2 has a range of SEN diagnoses and medical needs.  They have overcome barriers to their learning and proved beyond doubt that, with a positive attitude, a growth mindset approach and an excellent work ethic, anything is possible. However, even more impressive than the outcomes they have achieved is the way in which they have developed their social skills and their ability to communicate effectively with others.  Seeing them develop over the past 5 years has been a wonderful experience for so many members of our teaching staff and pastoral team.  Results: English Language 6, English Literature 8, Combined Science 6/5, History 8, L2 Finance Distinction, L2 Performing Arts Distinction.

Student 3: Student 3 has overcome a number of significant challenges during their educational journey which they have faced with determination and resilience.  They worked incredibly hard in order to achieve a positive set of outcomes and were diligent not only in their lessons, but also studying outside the classroom, including regular attendance at revision and booster sessions.  We are exceptionally proud of their achievements which are testament to their positive mindset and can-do attitude. Results: English Language 6, English Literature 7, Mathematics 6, Combined Science 7 7, Geography 7 , Spanish 6 , Performing Arts L2 Distinction, Sport L2 Distinction*.

Alex commented:

“When I came to this school at the end of year 8 from Ukraine due to the war, I could not speak English. The teachers helped and supported me in every way I needed. I am very happy with my results and I look forward to coming to Wilmington Post 16.”

Ruby commented:

“Initially I was very nervous and when I opened my results I was incredibly shocked, relieved and very pleased! Thank you to everyone that has contributed to this success. It is a great school!”
